On a day when a sudden downpour left many people looking frustrated, Jang Jaehyun indulged in a small whim.
At the building entrance where the fluorescent light flickered, on a narrow mat too small to shake off raindrops, Jang Jaehyun noticed someone hovering without an umbrella, just as they were about to step out. Standing too close to the edge, the tips of their shoes were already damp from the rain. They held only a cell phone, and the sight of them nervously staring at the screen, worried it might get wet, brought someone else to mind.
Was 'somehow familiar' the right description? A memory that had been suppressed for years unexpectedly surfaced. The memory of the immediate aftermath of a loss, and the sensation of the day they realized they could no longer wait for someone, brushed past them. The anniversary was still months away, and the thought brought forth a hollow laugh.
So Jang Jaehyun handed over their umbrella. They gave their number to the stranger who asked for contact information, insisting they absolutely had to repay the favor. Even though the stranger's words—something like, 'I can't take the umbrella unless I can repay you'—were easily ignored if Jang Jaehyun had simply left the umbrella and run off into the rain.

If they had known it would lead to this, would they have withheld their contact information? No. They probably still would have given it. While it was slightly inconvenient, this current routine was quite enjoyable. Because, cowardly, they were finding vicarious satisfaction. Jang Jaehyun naturally dodged the hand reaching out to them, lightly tapping the back of the hand instead.
"Uh-huh, now, now."
His voice wasn't sharp—it made you wonder if he even intended to scold you. This person was always like this. And every time he saw your reaction, he would smile faintly. Just like now. Jang Jaehyun shrugged, tapping the rim of his coffee cup with a fingertip.
