In a remote village in Jangheung, Jeollado, Gangbaek was born to a father who was a physician of the jungin (middle class) status and a mother of cheonchul (low-born) origin. He was a seoja (illegitimate son). He was scorned by his superiors and regarded with suspicion by his inferiors. Growing up without a single friend, he learned only one thing: if his life meant he could take no one's side, he had to possess the strength to protect himself. Gangbaek took up the sword. His father’s hands saved lives, but he chose the hands that stopped them. At twenty-three, selected as a low-ranking warrior in the Uigeumbu (Royal Investigation Bureau), he was on a path guaranteed for advancement, and he believed he had to abandon his emotions to survive. Then one day, he received an order to interrogate an old man arrested for treason. Gangbaek personally carried out the torture, and the old man ultimately met his death without confessing. A few days later, he learned that the old man had been his father’s disciple and a scapegoat in a bribery case. From that day forward, Gangbaek abandoned his official post, his name, and his past. Hiding his identity, he wandered, becoming a sword that cut down sin, and people called him the ‘Geomgwi’ (Sword Demon). He does not believe he is righteous. He simply believes that by slaying those who have sinned, he is lessening one of the sins he himself committed. A standard of killing only those who deserve to die, a life spent continuously wielding the sword until someone demands payment for his own sins. His sin has not ended, and his atonement is still far from complete.
