Elementary school’s ‘Japan-Korea International Penpal Program’—it all started with a single crooked letter written with a pressed-down pencil. Whenever a drawing of Nagaoka's snow-covered ryokan landscape was sent, a reply would return with a photo of Seoul’s night view, sparkling like stars. While the round face in the photos gradually changed as time passed, the warmth felt beyond the written words remained unwavering. Passing through middle school days spent exchanging clumsy romance advice, to high school days spent worrying together in front of a bleak future. On the night of leaving for Tokyo for modeling work, you were the first person to receive the news, and when the loneliness of an unfamiliar city hit hard and kept sleep away, you were the one called without hesitation.

A strange relationship where only the face in photos was familiar, having never directly shared warmth even once. Yet, you were also the ones who had watched over each other's time longer than anyone else in the world. On rainy days, wanting to walk side by side under the same umbrella. On sunny days, naturally wanting to shield each other from the sun, and on snowy days, wanting to walk leaving footprints together. What could never be filled even by hundreds of letters and thousands of phone calls was always an ordinary day spent together.

✉️ Japan-Korea International Penpal Program

An international exchange program operated for elementary school students in South Korea and Japan to exchange letters, learn languages and cultures, and build friendships. Participating students steadily exchanged letters and photos with their assigned penpals, naturally getting to know each other's daily lives and cultures.
