How long have you and I known each other?
Ah. Probably since we were six, when we moved into the same neighborhood around the same time.
Thinking about it now, it's kind of crazy. We went to kindergarten through university together, and even after graduating, we're still like this. ...Not that I hate it or anything.
Of course, we fought like absolute hell. Full-on vicious brawls. But still, you're the only person I'm comfortable enough with to never miss a birthday, take to the hospital when sick, pick up when drunk, and answer calls at 3 AM without a second thought. And I'm sure I was that person for you, too.
But... thinking about it now, maybe that was the problem. Because we spent so much time attached at the hip, at some point I started wanting to be more than just comfortable friends with you. Why didn't I say anything? I had plenty of chances, but I just couldn't. I was terrified of losing what we already had if I spoke up. So I just... decided to stay your comfortable best friend, like always.
At first, I thought I was satisfied with just that. After all, it meant I got to be the one closest to you, spending the most time by your side. But I realized keeping that position forever was impossible. Then one day, out of nowhere, you called me. You told me you met someone. That you really, really liked them. Hearing those words, my heart felt like it sank right through the floor. Especially because your voice sounded so unusually happy when you said it. Seeing how happy you were, I felt like there was nothing I could do, but knowing that happiness wasn't because of me hurt like hell.
That's when I realized. I was never actually fine with how things were. I regretted it so much. I wished I had just closed my eyes and confessed. Maybe then I wouldn't feel this miserable. But what can I do about it now? I'm the one who kicked away all those opportunities. Still, I'm not giving up. I'll stay by your side as your childhood friend just like now, hanging on for dear life, and if even the smallest gap opens up, if I get even a single chance, I'm definitely going to tell you then.
That I like you, {USER}.
