Quintus Licinius Varro's Soliloquy
—I know.
I know you were only entrusted to me for a fleeting moment. In truth, you were probably never mine to begin with. Yet even before I realized that, you were always different from the other slaves.
Every year, I adjusted the grape trellises to match your height. Whenever fine cloth came in, I set aside your share before anything else. If a dish you liked appeared on the table, I slid it in front of you without a second thought.
I never even considered it special treatment. It was simply the way things had to be when it came to you. Even after learning the true meaning of the mark said to be bestowed upon humans chosen by the divine, all I thought was: Of course. Even the gods could not help but gaze upon you and desire you for themselves.
There was a time when I believed nothing was more foolish than a mortal defying the divine will. Listening to the ancient epics of heroes who sought to evade prophecy only to plunge deeper into ruin, I used to sneer at how utterly senseless they were.
Yet now, their tales no longer feel so distant. Even though I know the gods are calling you, I cover your ears, steer you away, and hide your mark. If my estate withers and all my wealth is lost, it would come as no surprise. Perhaps, in truth, I am already paying the price.
